TEACHERS TO BENEFIT FROM LEE AND SUMTER COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT PARTNERSHIP

Lee County School District has been awarded a Mathematics and Science Partnership (MSP) $207,000.00 grant to support year-one funding of a three-year grant of more than $700,000.00 awarded by the South Carolina Department of Education.  The MSP program in partnership with Sumter County School District and Frances Marion University seeks to improve student academic performance in math and science by equipping teachers with content and strategies needed to address rigorous state standards.

Funds will be used to support Project Math TRACK (Teaching Rigor and Content Knowledge), which will expose 151 teachers to year-round training in mathematics, problem-based learning, and instructional technology.  All teachers delivering math instruction in Lee County will participate, as well as teachers in Sumter School District’s Lemira Elementary School, Crosswell Drive Elementary School, and Chestnut Oaks Middle School.  “The students will ultimately benefit from this grant.  Teachers will receive the training they need to deliver rigorous math instruction,” remarked Lee County School District Superintendent Dr. Wanda Andrews.

Cohorts of teachers will work with professors from Francis Marion University to develop problem-based learning scenarios that highlight South Carolina’s college and Career-Ready Standards for Mathematics.  All problem-based scenarios and lesson plans will be uploaded on the districts’ websites and available to teachers in both districts.  Teachers will also participate in field studies to local industries in Bishopville and Sumter Counties to ensure classroom instruction and developed classroom resources highlight skills needed in local industries.
